Darlene M. Iskra

Darlene M. Iskra served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years as a diving officer and surface warfare officer.  She was one of the first women officers to serve as a Diving Officer, and was a classmate of one of the winery owners, Vern Armstrong. She served on four different ships before taking command of the Rescue and Salvage ship USS Opportune (ARS-41) during Operation Desert Storm.  She was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2009 for her pioneering diving career, and for being the first women to command a ship in the Navy. Darlene retired from the U.S. Navy as a Commander in April 2000, and continues to dive recreationally…

but only in warm water!
